🌿 Finding Stability – A Reflection from Two Wheels to Four Paws

A Personal Realisation

This morning I went out on my bike—a bit of a change for me, and not something I do regularly, I have had the bike 18 months and been out on it a total of four times. As I navigated corners, tight spaces, and uneven ground, I realised how wobbly and unsure I felt. Every time I lost a sense of balance, even slightly, my body tensed and my confidence took a knock. I became more anxious, slower to respond, and more cautious in my movement.

And it struck me: how often might our dogs feel the same?

The Emotional Impact of Physical Instability

When dogs begin to struggle with physical stability, whether due to age, injury, chronic illness, or simply a lack of body awareness, it can affect so much more than how they move. It can alter how they feel in the world.

That sense of “wobbliness” doesn’t just cause hesitation—it chips away at confidence, increases anxiety, and can lead to behaviour changes.

Why Stability Matters

A dog’s sense of balance and body awareness (called proprioception) is fundamental to their wellbeing. If they begin to feel unsure on their feet or if their body doesn't move quite how they expect, it can be unsettling and stressful.

Signs Your Dog May Be Struggling with Stability

You might start to notice subtle signs, like:

  • Reluctance to jump onto the sofa or into the car

  • Slower movement or hesitation on walks

  • Refusing to go out on walks

  • Difficulty turning or navigating uneven ground

  • Avoiding slippery floors or narrow spaces

  • Seeming withdrawn, cautious, or lacking confidence

These are often the body’s quiet way of saying, “I don’t feel safe or steady.”

There Is Gentle Help Available

The good news? There are kind, supportive ways to help your dog feel more stable, secure, and confident again.

Through my work combining veterinary physiotherapy and Tellington TTouch, I use gentle, effective techniques to support balance, coordination, and emotional wellbeing. With simple changes at home, thoughtful exercises, and compassionate care, we can make a real difference.

From Wobbly to Well-Balanced

Just like me on my bike this morning, our dogs need time, support, and reassurance to feel confident in their movement again.

So if your dog seems more cautious, anxious, or unsteady lately, don’t dismiss it as “just getting older.” It might be their way of telling you they need some extra support.
